Market Stall Ideas

Where you place your stall makes a difference in your visitors and sales. If you don’t reserve a space well in advance of the event or a location is full, your choices will be limited. Look for high traffic areas, such as near beverage and food stands or restrooms. A corner or end spot stands out more than in a row of other vendors. If you are a regular vendor or the market is permanent, having the same spot makes it easy for regular and repeat customers to find you.

Layout strategies help your stall attract attention. If you have the space, arrange three tables in a “U” format so that visitors from all sides can see your goods. Use eye-catching colors -- clothing, wares and even vegetables -- on white sheets or paper to make the colors stand out. For wares, have one high-quality item displayed prominently to attract attention. For produce at farmer’s markets, group similar items together. Display recipes using items that you sell and have the necessary items conveniently grouped next to each recipe.

Weekend, festival and holiday markets are popular with families, but children can be distracting for both parents and vendors. If you have enough space, designate children’s area for face-painting, story-telling and other activities. Even with limited space you can hire someone to make balloon animals or perform simple magic tricks. Offer cold and hot water; include packets of instant hot chocolate and coffee in cold weather.

Use social media to promote your market stall with dates, hours and your stall location. Have an email sign-up list at your stall so you can send email reminders. Invest in shopping bags printed with your name; remember customers will carry this bag throughout the market area, giving you “free” advertising. Display business cards in your stall and flyers. A logo identifying you at every market event helps customers remember you. You can also offer discount coupons to customers if they return the following weekend or to the next event, and offer on-the-spot discounts for large purchases.
