1. Introduction.
A movie cannot be successful by its own. There is no doubt that poster is one of many factors that create a success of a movie. This essay will focus on analysing “Saving private ryan” (1998) movie poster. Although there are numbers of version which are different in design and content, I choose the first version of poster which targets the American market. 2. Context

The movie poster was released during the summer in 1998. The location of the message is not mentioned but it might be shown in public points such as: in the cinema or on the street in order to catch the eyes and raise awareness of audiences about the movie. Steven Spielberg was the source of the message and the title is: “Saving Private Ryan. The mission is a man.”. There is no caption mentioned. The film was labelled R - Restricted which alludes to the children who are under 17; an accompaniment with parent or adult guardian is required. Therefore, the target audience might be the American adults who are interested in the war topic; or for those who are fans of Steven Spielberg or Tom Hanks. The historic background of “Saving Private Ryan” is the invasion of Normandy, France on the “D-Day”, in June 1944; and the movie was made around the 50th anniversary of D-Day invasion with the purpose of reminding the sacrifices of American soldiers fighting against the Nazi Regime in the World War II.

3. Description

The poster is displayed in one sheet and is divided into two parts. The top occupies about half of the poster. Its main colour is fading mixed green and blue. There is also a small part in top corner describes the sky and is coloured grey. In the centre of the top part, we see a picture of four soldiers wearing of American military clothes. They all look serious, worry and unhappy. The four-face picture is transited into the other part by an extremely blur border. It is another scene of a soldier with his weapon walking lonely toward the sun. His small black shadow stands out from the brown orange background which represents the sunset time. The land that he walks on appropriates most of the area of the bottom part. It is used as a blackboard where shows all the basic information of the movie. The texts are all white and are set in the centre of its own line to be prominent in the background. Having the biggest text - “saving private ryan” with the bold in “saving” in the middle attracts audience first impression. Name of the main characters are placed right above and below the movie name. Specially, “tom hanks” stands alone above with the bigger front comparing with the other three actors. The others - “edward burns”, “matt damon”, “tom sizemore” are listed below the movie name. “Steven Spielberg film” is written all in capital and is placed at the top of all texts. In it, the movie director’s name is written in little bigger font. The title “the mission is a man.” is quite short and in small front mentioned below the names of actors. Finally, in the very bottom of the poster, we see the billing block which lists names of all factors that involved in the movie’s production process such as key crew member, producer, actors, directors or even logos. They are all appeared in condensed typeface so that the large number of involved name can be mentioned. Standing out of those by bold bigger appearance is the date of releasing “July 24”.

4. Interpretation The movie content

“Saving private ryan” is the story about a mission of rescuing James Ryan, the last of the four bothers of a family that may survive. The group of eight soldiers are sent to find out and bring him back to his mother, however, they all question: should they take risk of all their lives in saving one man? The frame

There is no frame in both pictures of the poster, even with no clear border between two. The lack of frame makes the top picture looks like a part of a whole scene that have been cropped. It not only focuses on the four main characters but...
